It’s my tummy rumbling and the smell of cooked meat that wakens me. The water is beginning to cool, so I’m not reluctant to climb out of the bath that has warmed me through and relaxed all my tense muscles.

I breathe the smell of steak and roasted vegetables in and hurry to towel off and dress before I get cold, then rush out to enjoy the feast Adam and Ethan have prepared for us.

The atmosphere around the dinner table is almost merry. The air is beginning to warm, and the food is sensational. Juice drips down my chin from the thick cut of steak I’m working my way through, my second one, but I don’t care. It tastes so good. I can’t remember the last time I had fresh steak.

I’m feeling utterly spoiled but I can’t squelch my worry about the others who were caught tonight.

“I love it here,” says Connor.

“Don’t you always stay here?” I ask.

“No, we never stay at the same place two times in a row,” says Jake.

“Stupid rule,” replies Noah.

“Mostly we stay in smelly holes,” says Brody.

“They’re not that bad,” replies Bobby.

“They’re not that good,” says Connor.

Adam sighs. “We need to take as few chances of discovery as possible to protect, not only us but also, the people who help us.”

“And this is a bit far from where we were meeting, so we haven’t been using it much lately,” adds Jake.

I nod. “Where will they be keeping the people they caught?” I ask.

The last of the merriment leaves the room. The men look at each other with furrowed brows and drawn mouths.

“They won’t keep them for long,” says Brody.

“You mean…”

“Which means we need to rescue them quickly,” says Adam.

“We’ve got about a week,” says Jake.

“Well, that’s a long time to keep them if they’re just going to kill them in the end anyway,” I say.

“They’ll want to get information from them first, Sample,” Liam says gently.

“Oh.”

I don’t know what else to say, and neither, it seems, does anyone else. The table is deathly quiet, and suddenly the air doesn’t feel like it has warmed much at all.

I raise my fork to my mouth, but the thought of taking another mouthful makes me want to gag. I lower my fork to my plate and looking around, realize that Ethan’s the only one still eating.

I don’t want to sit here any longer, so when Brody starts clearing the plates, I rise to help him.
